Developing Your Aesthetic
Summer Workshop

Description
In this exciting and enthusiastic tapestry weaving workshop participants will begin to discover what their aesthetic looks like, and employ it in the tapestries they make in this four day course. We will begin with, what is an aesthetic? In simple terms it is your personal taste or style. For an artist it is a set of principles underlying the work. In the same way that you make choices about the interior of your home or what you wear each day - tapestry artists make choices about the style of artwork they make. If you look at the work of Caron Penney, your tutor, you will see that she enjoys working with a sparse paired back colour palette not because she hasn’t got enough colours to work with but because she choses to limit herself, making the conscious decision, “less is more”. It is an active choice not a limitation of resources. In this workshop you will investigate your individual aesthetic choices and make a list of basic principles that suits your creativity. We will question the basis of your decisions and bring more clarity and purpose to the work you are making. Ahead of the workshop you will be expected to seek out some things to bring with you to help with this work. The tutor will contact you in advance to ensure you are ready. On day one there will be a presentation and group discussion, decisions on the idea for either sampling or weaving of a project in the workshop. The following days will involve warping, weaving and learning any new techniques required to articulate your ideas into weaving. In day four there will be a final supportive group discussion to conclude the workshop.
